Software Radio : Introduction

Software Radio is an enabling technology for future wireless telecommunication systems progressing towards the convergence of networks and multi-standard.

The convergence does not only concern wireless standards (PAN, LAN and WAN) but we may assert also that broadcast (DVB, DAB...), positionning (GPS) and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) will also merge in future communicating systems.

Software radio is a wide research area. We have been concentrating in the past 5 years on the following topics:

- hardware platform for SWR

- digital radio

- multi-processing

- heterogeneous processing (DSP+FPGA)

- design methodology for SWR

- reconfiguration

Several wireless standard have been implemented on a generic SDR platform (UMTS FDD, EDGE, GSM, BlueTooth, analog AM, analogFM).

We currently focus on 2 main themes

Reconfiguration video of the demonstration

- over-the-air

- SW patch download for bug fixing

- parameters download for performance enhancement

- dynamic (at service run-time)

- on a 384 kbps EDGE link supporting a seamless video service

Design methodology for SWR

- hardware/software co-design for SDR

- high level design and HW abstraction for radio applications

- automatic code generation for heterogeneous multi-processing

- code reliability
